12/24/2023 0 Comments Excuse me kevin gates download![]() As the transfers and freshmen arrive on campus, Nebraska’s roster is coming into focus. But it’s in a much better spot than a month ago. Nebraska’s interior defensive line, even with the additions of veterans Devin Drew, a fifth-year senior from Texas Tech, and Stephon Wynn Jr., a fifth-year junior from Alabama, remains the most unstable spot on the defense. A head count on the first day of practice in July, or possibly 10 days into camp after the pads come out, will shed light on the stability of the tight ends to enter the 2022 season. The tight ends slipped the farthest because of uncertainty after a series of spring injuries. Much like Washington, Williams will contend with returning Huskers ( Myles Farmer, Marques Buford and Noa Pola-Gates) in addition to a solid newcomer in DeShon Singleton, who got a head start in the spring. Secondary coach Travis Fisher added redshirt freshman Kaine Williams from Alabama last week. Texas transfer Marcus Washington will dive into a deep competition at wide receiver against Trey Palmer, Oliver Martin, Omar Manning, Alante Brown and others. Transfer Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda and freshman Janiran Bonner, plus walk-ons Brody Belt and Wyatt Liewer, not to mention four others on scholarship, appear in contention with Washington for a couple spots in the playing rotation. And it’s not a given, with Trey Palmer, Oliver Martin, Omar Manning and Alante Brown in position to run with the No. Washington will push for a spot in August among the top six. Washington caught 18 passes for 277 yards, similar to the numbers posted by Zavier Betts - the talented pass catcher who left the Nebraska program in March. Mickey Joseph added Texas transfer Marcus Washington to his group this week. The biggest risers are the receivers and safeties. Reassessing the groups, I’d go with the inside linebackers atop the rankings, followed by the wide receivers, safeties, edge rushers, cornerbacks, running backs, quarterbacks, tight ends, nickels, defensive tackles and offensive linemen. Much has changed, even since the April 9 Red-White game, because of transfers in and out. In the first week of spring practice more than two months ago, I ranked Nebraska’s offensive and defensive position groups based on their stability.Regardless, I’m on board with Alberts sticking a pin into this tradition. Balloons are stuck on the railing in front of my seat. Maybe I’m just grumpy about the balloons because of my personal run-in with a bunch of them last September. Who really needs another reminder, tied to your finger with a piece of string, that the program has slipped? In 2019, Nebraska trailed 48-0 against Ohio State late in the third quarter before the balloons rose. That’s 4 1/2 minutes later than 20 years ago. Last year in six home games, the balloon release, on average occurred 13 minutes, 25 seconds of clock time after kickoff. Will the balloons come back, too? Probably not.Īccording to Alberts, the tradition is coming to an end to preserve helium for medical uses and because of longstanding environmental concerns.Īs I saw it, the balloons served little purpose other than to remind fans that the Huskers had not scored a touchdown midway through the second quarter against Buffalo. The red-dyed Fairbury dogs, which returned after one year away, are delicious and add an element of flavor to the game day experience. ![]() That outrage actually made sense, though. They threw a fit many years ago when the school switched hot dog providers. Nebraska fans are nothing if not passionate. But since Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts announced Monday on radio that the school would no longer provide balloons at Memorial Stadium for release after the Huskers’ first touchdown scored, the generally unmeasured response has left me at a loss.
